Hobsbawm, Eric

   Historian
   A British Marxist historian, Eric Hobsbawm concentrates not so much on political as social and economic change, emphasizing cultural shifts alongside alterations in class conditions. His specialist area is nineteenth and twentieth-century Europe, about which he has written the highly praised and popular quartet The Age of Revolution, 1789-1848 (1975), The Age of Capital, 1848-1875 (1962), The Age of Empire, 1875-1914 (1987) and Age of Extremes: The Short Twentieth Century, 1914– 1991 (1994). A realist and pragmatist, Hobsbawm does not so much provide incisive insights as trace social themes across time. Among his other important books are Labouring Men (1964), Industry and Empire (1968) and Revolutionaries (1973).
